Mrs. Shirley Helton Walters, age 83, of Elkin passed away Tuesday, August 07, 2018 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born in Buncombe County April 17, 1935 to Miles and Emma Swaim Helton.
Mrs. Walters was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and Women’s Missionary Union Leader. She graduated from Elkin High School in 1953 and was the Captain of the cheerleading squad. She retired from BB&T in Elkin. Mrs. Walters was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clay Walters; brother, David Helton; sisters, Jerri Powell and Melinda Dufford.
Survivors include: sons, Scott Walters and wife Beth of Elkin; Jeffrey Clay Walters and wife Claudette of Mooresville; brother, Gary Helton and wife Linda of California; grandchildren, Nathan Walters, Ian Walters, Josh Walters, Kimberly Ledbetter; great grandchildren, Gavin Walters and Cayden Walters.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Robbins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.

The family would like to thank the staff of Chatham Nursing Center, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, and Dr. Thomas Mitchell for their care.
