Mildred Lyon Cook, 86, of Alliance, and formerly of Elkin, NC, died on January, 24, 2014, at 3:05 a.m. at Alliance Community Care Center. She was born on December 19, 1927 in Surry County, NC, and lived in Alliance since 2009. Mildred was a graduate of Piedmont Bible College and retired as an inspector for Lucia's Sportswear Manufacturer. While in Alliance, she attended The Chapel in Marlboro and was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Jonesville, NC. Mrs. Lyon was a member of the Federation of Republican Women and a member of the Rescue Squad Auxiliary. In her past-time, she enjoyed gardening and was an avid radio talk show listener. She is survived by her daughter, Sheree (Richard) Wollam of Alliance; her son, Jeff (Joyce) Lyon of Franklinville, NJ; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Poteat (Becky) and Earnest Poteat ( Carolyn), both of Elkin, NC; a sister, Ann Bowers (Robert) of Elkin, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, C. Harold Lyon on July 2, 2000, whom she married on August 16, 1946; her second husband, Jimmy Lee Cook who died September 23, 2008 whom she married on November 6, 2004; her parents, Jim M. and Lillie M. (Mickel) Poteat; a sister, Mammie Darnell; and three brothers, Jimmy, Richard and Ralph Poteat. The family will receive friends at Walton-Schrader Funeral Home on Tuesday, January, 28, 2014 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Joel Cochran of The Chapel of Marlboro and Mildred's grandson, Pastor Kevin Burkholder of Goss Memorial co-officiating. A funeral service will be held in Elkin, NC on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor J. Jeffery Lyon of New Freedom Bible Church, Berlin, N.J. officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
