Barbara Cochrane Hester, born December 17, 1936, in Elkin, NC to the late Herbert F. and Effie M. Cochrane, passed away peacefully at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC, surrounded by her loving family.
Barbara was employed by Chatham Manufacturing Company in the Payroll Department and later self‑employed through Country Gifts & Sweets and Belk. She was a devoted member of Grassy Creek United Methodist Church in State Road, where she faithfully served in many offices. She was also active in the Grassy Creek Extension Homemakers, where she held several leadership roles.
She enjoyed many hobbies, including crocheting, quilting, painting, needlepoint, making Christmas ornaments, cooking, and crafting in general. She was also an avid reader. Her creativity and love for learning touched everyone around her.
Above all, Barbara was dedicated to her family and served as a role model through her compassion and strength. She cared for many loved ones during times of illness without complaint, embodying selflessness and grace. Truly, she was one in a million.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Jack J. Hester, and her son, Jack "Randy" Hester. She was also preceded by her sisters Anne C. Hunsucker (Kenny) and Aleta C. Henderson (Bob).
She is survived by her son, H. Michael Hester (Teresa), and her daughter, Debra H. Collins (Eddie). Her cherished grandchildren include Michelle H. Fisher (Rett), Devin M. Hester (Lauren), Kristin H. Hawks (Chris), Tiffany H. Coulahan (David), and step‑grandchild Julie Branch (Brad). She was blessed with 14 great‑grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, Karen H. Lamka (Tim), Angie Hester, Renee Bowman, and Brenda Sheldon. Nephews Russell Hunsucker, Allen Hester, Kevin Hester, and John Cloniger.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the special relatives and friends who were dear to her, and especially to Kay Smith, her devoted caregiver.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 14, at 2:00 PM in the Elkin Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grassy Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Debra Collins, 109 Klondike Rd. State Road NC, 28676.
Barbara was a wonderful, loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her legacy of kindness, creativity, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
