Barry Carter

Mr. Barry Augustus Carter, age 85, of Elkin, North Carolina, passed away on October 26, 2026. He was born on April 7, 1941, to Harvey and Ethel Shore Carter.

Barry was a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as an usher for many years. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was known for his humble spirit, generous heart, and willingness to give to others.

Barry retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after years of dedicated service. Above all, he treasured his family and was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He shared 54 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Vivian Carter, and was a devoted father to his daughter, Rochelle Carter. He also held a special place in his heart for his several nieces and nephews, who were an important part of his extended family.

In his spare time, Barry enjoyed fishing and was an avid fisherman. He was also a passionate fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels, a team he proudly cheered for. One of his favorite daily routines was meeting up with his longtime friends at McDonald’s to enjoy a cup of coffee and good conversation. These simple moments and lasting friendships brought him great joy. He also shared a special bond with his beloved cat, Fluffy, who brought companionship and happiness to his life.

In addition to his parents, Barry was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph Carter, Dannie Ray Carter, and Robert Carter; and his sisters, Betty Cockerham, EraLee Durham, Katherine Wilmoth, and Annie Faye Greene.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 54 years, Vivian Carter; his daughter, Rochelle Carter; his brother, Leamon Carter; his beloved cat, Fluffy; his special nieces and nephews; and other family members and dear friends who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Danny Dodds and Rev. Joe Wood officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
