Billy Jay Mayes

Billy Jay Mayes, 89, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026. He was born in Surry County to Jay and Edith Blackburn Mayes. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Kaye Reves.

Surviving is his wife, Agnes Jean Hayes Mayes of the home, and niece, Dr. Rochelle Reves Bazemore of Southport; sisters-in-law, Bernice Cunnigham, Carrie (Rocky) Walker; brothers-in-law, Harold (Linda) Hayes and Jerry Hemric.

Bill was a US Navy Veteran and a graduate of Mountain Park High School and Appalachian State University where he received his Industrial Arts degree.

Bill loved fixing things, the outdoors, hunting, gardening, riding his motorcycle, reading and just talking with Agnes and their friends.

He was the oldest member of Mountain Park Baptist Church where he was deacon. Before his sickness he taught the Senior Ladie’s Sunday School Class for many years.

Bill was told approximately fifteen years ago that he had Parkinsons Disease and a little later that he also had muscular degeneration. His sight disease took away his ability to read, drive and many other things that required good sight. Bill did not complain about his diseases, but he did hate the day that he could not drive.

We extend our greatest gratitude to our friends for their support, visits and prayers. Your kindness and generosity will not be forgotten.

Bill was employed by Sears for 10 years as an appliance technician. He taught electrical and appliance repair at Wilkes Vocational Center and worked at Kennedy’s in Elkin in the sporting section.

He and Agnes took care of his parents during their battles with cancer. They learned that being a caregiver was a challenge, but a chance to really show how much love the one you are giving much of your life to.

We are deeply saddened and heartbroken of his passing, but he leaves many happy and beautiful memories for those loved him most.

Bill got to stay at home until his last two days on earth. He passed at Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice house in Dobson. Thank you for your excellent care.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 26, 2026 at Mountain Park Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Henderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 pm at the church. Burial will follow at Mountain Park Cemetery with Millitary Honors being provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10346.
