Nebo

Nancy "Carol" Hanes Long was born on December 25, 1940, in Elkin, North Carolina to Harvey Edgar Hanes and Edna Earlene Childress Hanes. She was raised and lived in the Elkin and State Road area all of her youth. As an adult, she loved to travel and therefore lived in many places.

She graduated from Mountain Park High School where she was the salutatorian of her graduating class and was awarded the Best Citizenship Award by her teachers. She attended Brevard Junior College and later in life attended James Madison University. There she hoped to receive her college degree and seek employment with the Foreign Service; however, her dream was cut short when she was diagnosed with lupus and was unable to continue her studies.

Her marriage to Harold Lee Mitchell was blessed with two daughters: Cathy Dawn Mitchell Wilson (Randy) and Sheri Lee Mitchell Gates; grandchildren: Joshua Raymond and wife Courtney, John Raymond and wife Helen, Jackson Raymond and wife Michelle, Alora Gates, and Alexas Gates; great-grandchildren: Isabel (Izzie) Raymond, Caylee Raymond, Justin Raymond, Ruby Raymond, Isabella Raymond, Parker Camille Raymond, and Joshua (Cheech) Raymond, all of whom survived her.

She is also survived by a brother, Jerry Haynes and a sister, Barbara Ann Hiatt, both who live in Elkin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents Lawson and Nellie Wood Childress, a dear sister-in-law Barbara Haynes, a dear brother-in-law Clark Hiatt, and a dear aunt Elsie Childress Lyons.

Carol was employed as a legal secretary most of her working years and retired at the age of 49 due to disability. Thereafter, she worked as a part-time caregiver until the age of 79.

She dearly loved animals and almost always had one or more cats and dogs in her daily life.

On February 12, 2018, Carol married her beloved Wilfred (Will) Lee Long, but sadly, after only one joyous and happy year Will suddenly passed away.

On July 29, 2026, Carol left her earthly home to be reunited with all her loved ones who have gone on before.

Will's ashes will be interned with Carol.
