David Dwight VanHoy

February 4, 1950 — October 17, 2025

Hays

David Dwight VanHoy, age 75, died in his beloved home in Hays, NC, with his wife Gail by his side, on Friday, October 17, 2025. David was born in Yadkin County in 1950 to Hubert Parks Vanhoy and Mary Mozelle Vanhoy. He attended Starmount High School and Wilkes Community College. He worked for 30 years at Candle Corporation of America, where he retired early due to health issues as the Supervisor of Maintenance. Gail Lynn VanHoy met the light of her life, Mr. V, at the Candle Corporation of America in 1999. They were married that same year at Beulah Land Baptist Church in Jonesville, NC. She has served as his full-time caregiver and confidant since March 4, 2016. Gail will always remember David for his love and kindness; she cannot remember ever arguing with him. David had four biological children: Peggy “Lynn” Vanhoy Brown, Crystal Lynn Vanhoy, Daven Jeanette “D.J.” Vanhoy, and Jonathan David Vanhoy. He had three step-children: Eric Raymond Terry, John Luther Terry, and Verna Lenis Terry. He had five grandchildren (Joel Stacy Jones Jr, Andrew Harrison Jones Jr, Trey Jevon Lomax, Justice Dwight “J.D.” Lomax, and Aamir Kawan Adams) and three step-grandchildren (Dylan Terry, Cole Terry, Luke Terry, and McKenzie Terry). He had seven great-grandchildren and loved all of them dearly.

David was an avid dog-lover and left behind a senior pug, Cooper, who was always by his side. David loved his church family. He and his wife are members of New Covenant Baptist Church in Hays, NC. The family would like to thank Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care of Elkin, NC, for their compassionate and impeccable care of David over the last year and a half. Everyone who knew David, knew he was a lover of: classic cars, oldies music, the Carolina Tarheels Basketball team, the Philadelphia Eagles Football team, playing his guitar, dogs of all shapes and sizes, working in his shop, all sweet treats, old Westerns, swinging on the front porch, grilling for his family, and hosting his grandchildren around the pool.

David was preceded in death by his father (Hubert Parks VanHoy), his mother (Mary Mozelle VanHoy), his brother (Calvin Parks VanHoy), his sister (Margaret Jane Vanhoy Southard), his daughter (Peggy Lynn Vanhoy Brown), and his son-in-law (Perry Clay Brown).

Visitation will occur from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with the memorial service to follow directly after at Elkin Funeral Services in Elkin, NC. Donations in his memory can be made to the Jerusalem Prayer Team or the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina.
