Doris Faye Harris Carter

Apr 24, 1943 — Sep 6, 2026

Doris Faye Harris Carter, age 83, of Elkin, was promoted to her heavenly home on Sunday morning, September 6, 2026, at Chatham Nursing Center, after battling Alzheimer’s Disease several years.

Mrs. Carter was born April 24, 1943, in Yadkin County to the late Ora Harris and Hazel Long Harris of the Mount View Community. She was the eighth of nine children in a hardworking, farming family, which included four brothers and five sisters. As a young girl, Doris attended Mount View Baptist Church, where she placed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Doris was a loving and devoted wife to her high school sweetheart, Harvey “Leamon” Carter, for 65 years. Together, they built a beautiful life and lovingly nurtured and raised their three daughters, Jacqueline, Jamie, and Julie, as well as their granddaughter, Kristin.

Mrs. Carter worked for C.B. Eller Cafeteria, Lucia, and Candle Corporation over the years, but she was best known for her tireless work around the home and for the many home-cooked meals she lovingly prepared for her family and friends. Her greatest joy was caring for those she loved, and her home was a place where family, friends, and loved ones were always welcomed.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her daughters, Jacqueline Carter, and Julie Carter; her brothers, Norman, James, Spencer, and Earl Harris; and her sisters, Gerri Sasser, Carolyn O’Connor, Alice Judd, and Judy Simmons.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Leamon Carter; daughter, Jamie Maines and husband, Mike; granddaughter, Kristin Kennedy and husband, Charlie; and great-grandsons, Carter, Bralyn, Miles, and Lincoln Kennedy; several nieces and nephews; sister in laws; and special family, Barry and Vivian Carter and Libby Day.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Chatham Nursing Center and Mountain Valley Hospice for the many years of compassionate love and care they provided to Doris and her family. They would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to their many friends and church family at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Island Ford Baptist Church for their prayers, kindness, and many expressions of love and support.

Her homegoing service will be held Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Charlie Kennedy and Dr. Danny Dodds. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Because of Mrs. Carter’s testimony of faith and her trust in Jesus Christ, we know that she has been healed and is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Though our hearts are saddened by her passing, we rejoice in the assurance that this separation is only temporary. Until that glorious day when we are reunited, we will carry her love in our hearts and remain grateful for every moment we were blessed to share with her.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Island Ford Christian School Building Fund 2124 Hwy 67 Jonesville, NC 28642.
