Douglas Lee Melton, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Doug was born in Radford, Virginia, to Paul Douglas and Fannie Byrd Melton on October 26, 1943. After high school, he began a career working for the Department of Transportation in Engineering, retiring after 37 years of service.

As a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in State Road, Doug served in many areas throughout the years. He taught Sunday School, served on the deacon board, led the Men's Brotherhood, served as the church clerk, and helped with the youth. He also enjoyed singing in the choir, especially the Christmas cantatas. He found great joy in his and Bonnie's many trips to the beach, especially at Cherry Grove, where he could enjoy his favorite pastime searching for shark teeth.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Melton, his sister, Margaret Johnson, and a brother-in-law, Johnny Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Gambill Melton, a sister-in-law, Jane Gambill Wishon, and husband Edwin, nephew Rev. John Wishon and wife Becca, a niece, Sharon Johnson of Houghton, New York, several cousins, and many dear friends.

Doug will be remembered in a service on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, led by Rev. Chad Whitley and Dr. Roger Hensley. A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral will begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery fund.
