Helen Golden Garris

Helen Juanita Golden Garris, age 97, of Elkin, passed away to go be with her Lord on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Parkwood Place.

Helen was born October 15, 1926, in Surry County to Shadrick and Bertha Welborn Golden. Helen was a faithful member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and loved her church family. Helen retired from Chatham Manufacturing after 45 years and 5 months. After retiring from Chatham, Helen started working at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center; she loved all the people there. She loved the Lord, loved people, and loved helping others in many ways. Helen had a card ministry for many years and enjoyed making cakes for others. She always said Bertha and Eddie Salley were so good to her; she loved them.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Harvey, Robey, Leo, Joe, and Bill; one sister, Swannee Pittman; and her dear beloved husband, Lewis Garris, who passed away on January 7, 2004, she would often say, “Without the Lord, I could never make it.”

Mrs. Garris is survived by sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, and Pete, the cat.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the many loving caregivers and visitors Helen had over the years, Taylor, Krista, and Margaret, especially Pam Ferguson and Sally Scales, who were with her for two years; Ann Cook, who faithfully came by to feed Pete and visit with Helen every day for Twenty-eight months and stayed many 12 hour nights to take care for her. Johnny Blevins, who faithfully visited often, Ken Kubecki for keeping Pete supplied with cat food, and everyone at Yadkin Valley Home Health and Mountain Valley Hospice for all their care.
