Melvin Reece Gilliam, age 60, born December 19, 1965, in Surry County, passed away on September 1, 2026, at Carolina Caring in Catawba County.

Melvin was a man who loved deeply and lived with a strong devotion to the people closest to him. He especially cherished his son and grandchildren and found great joy in spending time with family, friends, and his dog, Cat-Nip. His presence brought warmth to those around him, and he will be remembered for the love he gave so freely.

In his working life, Melvin was a regional manager for ULCS and loved his job. Outside of work, he was an avid hunter, devoted Miami Dolphins fan, and a true John Wayne fanatic.

He is survived by his son, Nathan Gilliam; his grandchildren, Jase and Kanon Gilliam; his parents, George and Lavania Gilliam. He is also survived by his brother, Randy Gilliam (Sheryl); his sister, Gigi Willey (Ralph); his nieces, Meagan Bledsoe (Junior) and Kaci Gilliam; and his nephew, Roman Gilliam (Savannah). Each of them shared in the love of family that meant so much to Melvin, and his memory will remain close to their hearts.

Melvin also shared a deeply cherished bond with his chosen family, Jen and Kerri, their daughters, Jenevieve “Vieve”, Eloise “Lu”, and Georgia. The girls lovingly knew him as “Papaw Melvin,” a name and role he held with great love and pride. Their lives were woven together through everyday moments, and the love they shared made them family in every way that mattered.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lesley and Sadie Carrico.
