Millie Batalla Young

Millie Batalla Young, age 95, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2026, at her residence.

Millie was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico on March 30, 1931, to Genaro and Tulia Zaragosa Batalla. She was a graduate of St. Lukes School of Nursing in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1954 and married her husband Frank Young in 1956. Millie practiced as a registered nurse with the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas until she and Frank moved to Elkin in 1963. She continued her nursing career at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and retired after 35 years of service.

Millie enjoyed traveling, music, reading, crocheting, knitting and was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church of Jonesville. She was a founding member of the Yadkin Valley Senior Center Prayer Shawls Ministry, making hundreds of prayer shawls for Mountain Valley Hospice. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Young.

Survivors include, a son, Frankie Young and wife Lori of Elkin, two grandchildren, Jonathan Young and Bailey Young, several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 17, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Crestwood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Michael Weaver officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or to the charity of the donor's choice.
